If you have ever visited Downtown San Augustine, Texas, you are sure to have asked, “What is that all about? There is a large construction! Is it a church? Is it a museum? Is it a haunted house?” I have heard all of these questions!

The Deck in San Augustine built by Gary Brewer.

Love it or hate it, it is part of what makes our town different! There are some true fans, and there are some true enemies of the structure that I call our local art district.

The deck in San Augustine is what I call our local art district.

Gary Brewer is a friend of mine. He is a unique individual, and he has so many talents.

Gary is a very good carpenter. I have hired him for several projects, and he always does a great job. He is a good artist too. Sometimes his taste in art isn’t what I like, but we are still friends.

There are many articles about his large deck! I will link to a couple of them here: https://www.texasmonthly.com/arts-entertainment/east-texas-carpenter-gothic-contraption-decks-spikes-historic-square/

If you would like to visit his deck and meet Gary, you can stop by Hardware on the Square and ask to meet him. The people at the hardware store will get in touch with Gary and arrange a meeting.

Gary’s deck is in the San Augustine Main Street district. It is unique and strange and part of what makes our town a great place to visit!

If you are a guest at Bland Lake Hideaway, the best place to stay in San Augustine, Texas, I highly recommend just driving the five miles to town to see this amazing structure.
