Bland Lake Hideaway is the home of Cackle Berry Farm, and it is the best place to stay in San Augustine. At Cackle Berry Farm, we are on a journey to raise some of the best chickens anywhere in the world.

Part of the journey of raising American Bresse Chickens is working out how to feed them. I have read lots of ways to feed the chickens so that they lay good healthy eggs and grow amazing meaty carcasses.

From everything I have read, this breed of chicken does really well on a high-protein diet. They also benefit from the carbohydrates found in whole grain. So I have been practicing on making feed that has these ingredients.

So, here is my current feeding mix:

1 Part whole corn

1 Part whole oat

I mix these two together and let them ferment.

1 Part dry dog food

1/2 Part calf manna

From my calculations this should get me real close to 22% protein and has lots of healthy carbohydrates.

In the future, I might add some black sunflower seeds to get some oil in their diet.

One of the things that I discovered from fermenting the feed is that the water I pour off of the grain is something that the chicks really like to drink. I was surprised by how much of this they drink every day.
